Services for Adults
1. Communication

Issues

Adults may have difficulty communicating (expressive language) and understanding (receptive language) for a number of reasons. These include:-

  • developmental issues from birth
  • brain injury e.g. stroke or TBI
    (traumatic brain injury)
  • neurological impairment
  • age related issues e.g. dementia
  • hearing impairment
People may have difficulty naming objects, talking in sentences, staying on a conversational topic, or remembering everyday tasks.
Reading and writing skills may also be affected.
Assessment
Speech pathologists evaluate speech and language using a number of formal and informal measures. We have a range of tests which evaluate a person’s ability to use communication and understand language.

Therapists are trained in remediating aphasia (loss of understanding and/or expression of language), apraxia (difficulty executing and carrying out learnt purposeful movements) and dysarthria (a motor speech disorder where muscles of the mouth, face and respiratory system become weak) and a range of communication impairments resulting from areas outlined above.
